Situated in a prime seafront location, in one of Funchal’s most upmarket areas, the Pestana Vila Lido is a five-star property which delivers everything you’d hope for in an urban beachfront resort. It’s a fabulous combo of original building (dating back to 1938), which houses the common areas of reception, library, cocktail bar and a la carte restaurant, plus the stunning cylindrical shaped modern space where you’ll find all the guest rooms and the Flor de Mar restaurant for breakfast and buffet dinners.

The modern building was constructed in the late eighties and was completely overhauled a couple of years ago to bring it up to the smart five-star standards that it offers today. All the rooms are spacious with wooden flooring, huge floor-to-ceiling windows and good bathrooms with walk-in showers; each comes with a large furnished balcony with either full sea or side sea views. The colour palettes used throughout are a tasteful blend of neutral shades with splashes of blues, greens and corals echoing the ocean scape in front. For something extra special, book one of the suites; you’ll get double the space both inside and out!

This property also shines in terms of its amenities. First things first, we have to mention the pool deck. It’s a vast area with a huge outdoor pool, surrounded by plenty of loungers and staff to help you arrange your umbrella! This is also where you get access to the sea itself. There is a flag up so that you can be sure you’re safe to go in, and a couple of access points with steps directly down to the waves. Don’t forget to take your towel with you…it might be a little chilly (though sea temperatures here don’t drop much below 20 degrees)! Also at pool level, there’s a bar and restaurant (perfect for a lunch or a snack) and a spa where you can not only enjoy a range of treatments but also relax in the sauna and Turkish bath. There’s a games room for anyone looking for board games and more, and a library for those who prefer a quiet corner to read and relax. The garden is lovely too. It’s beautifully kept and offers the perfect terrace for pre-dinner drinks and other little hidden spots where you can simply sit and enjoy the view.

Come sundown, head to the cocktail bar for drinks and then on to the Vila Lido Restaurant. The à la carte menu here is superb, focusing on traditional Madeiran cuisine, executed to perfection.

Last but not least we have to mention the staff. They are very impressive. All enthusiastic, cheerful and keen to help in any way possible. For a luxury stay, but one that certainly won’t break the bank, Pestana Vila Lido delivers on all counts.
