“Atmospheric and historic 18th century coaching inn in Margate Old town. Featuring six cute (if creaky!) bedrooms, each uniquely designed, and a lively bar and restaurant. A romantic boutique haven by the seaside, overflowing with personality and excellent value for money.”

Hotel review

The George & Heart in Margate is a stylish, thoughtfully designed boutique hotel and pub set in the heart of the Old Town. Housed in a beautifully restored 18th-century building, it blends historic charm with modern comfort, creating a relaxed atmosphere that immediately welcomes you in. Each of the six rooms has its own distinct character, with vintage furniture, curated artwork, and high-quality linens. Individually designed by creative figures from the local community, the rooms reflect Margate’s artistic spirit. Thoughtful details, like handwritten notes or small gifts left on the bedside table, give the experience a personal, cared-for feel, reflecting the owners’ presence in the design. In some rooms, freestanding bathtubs sit at the foot of four-poster beds, adding a sense of quiet luxury. The result is a calm, immersive space that feels tucked away from the world outside. There is also a large two-bedroom Heritage Suite, ideal for families or groups. It features an expansive kitchen and dining area with exposed brick and a breakfast bar that evokes the feel of an upmarket New York loft.

Within the hotel, guests have access to a private lounge stocked with tea, coffee, and snacks, run on an honesty basis, and soft music drifts through the corridors, creating a serene atmosphere. A treatment room is also available for pre-booked wellness sessions and massages. Downstairs, the bar and dining room offer an intimate setting with low lighting, seasonal cocktails, local beers, and a menu built around fresh, carefully sourced ingredients. Bustling with local residents and weekenders, it's become a much-loved spot in town.

The location is ideal for wandering. Margate’s beach, galleries, and independent shops are just around the corner and it’s worth stopping for oysters and fresh crab sandwiches at the Mannings Seafood Stall on the seafront as you go. Despite the buzz of the town, the guest rooms remain quiet and tucked away.

The team at The George & Heart has created something genuinely special. Service is warm and considered without ever feeling overstated. For visitors seeking a boutique stay that reflects Margate’s unique creative spirit, this is a perfect choice.
