About Ile de Porquerolles

Fringed with powder white sands, craggy cliffs and secluded coves, blessed with sunshine and perfumed by the scents of eucalyptus and pine, the Île de Porquerolles — a short ferry ride from Hyères, on the Côte d'Azur — is utterly idyllic. Four miles long and two miles wide, the island has just a few hundred permanent inhabitants and a wonderfully sleepy, laid-back feel. Quaint, intimate and traditional, the best places to stay on Île de Porquerolles are fabulous for families or couples looking to slow down in spectacular surroundings.

This lovely little island arguably boasts one of France's best beaches, the unspoilt Plage de Notre Dame, and has been designated both a national park and a conservation area. Hire bikes to cycle through the countryside, hike along dramatic coastal paths, or kick back on Plage de la Courtade. There's also top-notch sailing, kayaking and fishing starting from the village's little port.

Whilst Île de Porquerolles' village was founded only in the 19th Century, the Fort St Agathe attests to a far longer history. Culture buffs can visit the iconic Cap d'Arme Lighthouse, the Eglise Saint-Anne and the Moulin du Bonheur for striking views, and marvel at amazing artwork in the Fondation Carmignac. Return to one of the best places to stay on Île de Porquerolles for relaxing evenings of great seafood and southern French wine.

The Best Places to Stay on Île de Porquerolles

For a Village Stay

  • Villa Sainte Anne overlooks the village square, close to the island's main port. A friendly, 25-room hotel popular with families, it's well-situated for sailing and fishing trips. Soak up the relaxed, welcoming vibe at the excellent restaurant, or kick back on the shaded terrace. Book a family suite if travelling with little ones.

For a Tranquil Hideaway

  • Le Mas du Langoustier is a delightful terracotta-coloured hotel set amidst lush botanical gardens, with floral wallpaper in smaller rooms, and spacious suites with private balconies. A sandy path leads to the beach and there are tennis courts, a swimming pool and spa treaments onsite. Hop aboard the hourly shuttle to the village, or soak up the tranquil sense of seclusion at the hotel's two restaurants — one of which has a Michelin star. Enchanting.
