About Celle

Set on the banks of the River Aller in Lower Saxony, Celle has a long and rich history. Most of the centre was preserved from destruction in World War Two, making it one of the finest examples of a medieval city left in Germany. From its charming buildings, museums and galleries to its tranquil parks, Celle is a great destination for a cultural city break. The best places to stay in Celle offer easy access to the area's sights and attractions, as well as modern and comfortable accommodation in the city centre.

Begin with a tour of Celle Castle, the area’s largest fortification, surrounded by a park and romantic landscaped gardens. Explore the Hoppener Haus, one of the oldest of over 500 half-timbered buildings dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, which are now home to art galleries, craft breweries and traditional eateries. Stroll through the Fontäne im Französischen Garten, with its pond, fountain and avenue of lime trees with the whole family, and head to the Celle Garrison Museum for a deep-dive into the city's past.

Kids will love discovering the Stadtpark Celle, a sprawling complex with playgrounds, petting zoos, and a boating lake. It’s also a great place to simply unwind, with a plethora of food stalls and shaded greenery. For something out of the ordinary, visit the Kunstmuseum with its mixed collection of contemporary art and ancient sculpture. The best places to stay in Celle fill up fast during the summer months, so book your trip well in advance.
