About Panaji

Goa’s riverside capital, Panaji — previously Panjim — has long been a fascinating cultural melting pot. Distinctive Portuguese influences can be felt in UNESCO-listed neighbourhoods with colourful heritage buildings, and delicious dishes can be sampled at hole-in-the-wall bakeries and convivial traditional taverns. Accommodation options in the city are wide-ranging, with our Gurus’ list of the best places to stay in Panaji highlighting small boutique properties as well as larger urban hotels.

The striking Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is undoubtedly the city’s most iconic landmark, and well worth discovering. Amble along the surrounding streets on foot, popping into fabric shops or cafés, admire the imposing Adil Shah Palace and the Goa State Museum, or fill your bags with spices and handicrafts at the municipal market. The beautiful district of Fontainhas boasts lovely historic residences, as well as some excellent museums and galleries. Take a guided walking tour and step into the Fundacao Oriente, before marvelling at the distinctive handcrafted tiles for which the area has become famous.

Venture further afield for birdwatching at Divar Island or the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. Sunset cruises along the Mandovi River come highly recommended, as do leisurely dinners by the waterfront. There are some excellent little bars scattered across the city, too, perfect for sampling a Goan craft gin, cold beer or a fiery glass of feni. The teams at the best places to stay in Panaji will be happy to point you towards the area’s most popular spots!

For Boutique Charm

  • Surya Kiran Goa is housed within a century-old private residence. Transformed into a five-bedroom hotel by the current owners in 2018, the villa has individually decorated spaces with dark wooden furnishings, tiled floors and colourful painted walls. Well-tended gardens, a refreshing pool, a small bar and bistro add to the appeal.
  • Mateus Hotel, in the heart of Panaji’s Latin Quarter, is within walking distance of a plethora of galleries, cafes and eateries. Expect mid-century furnishings, statements tiles and polished concrete in guest rooms set within an ochre-painted edifice. Small and simple, with a great plunge pool.
  • O’Pierre is another boutique, family-owned hotel, this time with contemporary guest rooms. Comfortable interiors and affordable rates — as well as family rooms — make this a lovely city choice. The rooftop bar is superb for sundowners with views over Panaji.

For City Style

Three houses of red laterite built for a family of artists and facing the sea, the property is now a superb small hotel with two swimming pools, a spa pavilion and mouth-watering Goan fare. Interiors feature antiques and artwork from the owners’ collection, and the sunsets are spectacular. Very romantic.
