About Depoe Bay

Set on a spectacular stretch of Oregon's Pacific Coast, Depoe Bay is famed for its dramatic shoreline and its world-class whale watching opportunities. Migratory whales can be spotted in December and from March to May, whilst a group of grey whales known as the Pacific Coast Feeding Group make their home in the area during the summer months. Depoe Bay also boasts the world's smallest navigable natural harbour, perfect for sailors and keen anglers. Accommodation options include everything from simple lodges for trips with friends to luxurious couples' hideaways, fit for a host of tastes and budgets. The best places to stay in Depoe Bay promise striking sea views and epic Pacific sunsets.

If you're drawn to Depoe Bay in the hope of seeing magnificent whales, Oregon State Park's Whale Watching Centre is the place to start. The team organises two Whale Watching Weeks during the annual migrations, with knowledgeable volunteers at 20 coastal locations. Head out to sea for whale watching tours, fishing charters or sailing trips. Depoe Bay offers excellent surfing, too — hire a board or bring your own and join the locals out on the water.

Oregon's craggy coastline is brilliant for long walks. Venture to Yaquina Head Lighthouse and the surrounding 100-acre area for superb hiking trails, lovely beaches and the chance to see some whales. Alternatively, drive or cycle along the Otter Crest Loop for gorgeous views, picnic at Forgarty Creek or watch salt water swirling in the Devil's Punchbowl at high tide.

Back in town, you'll find a plethora of great seafood eateries, as well as plenty of shops selling nostalgic seaside holiday treats — from kites to saltwater taffy. Kick back at one of the best places to stay in Depoe Bay before your next big day of adventure!
