This contemporary resort feels more French Riviera than Maldives, with brilliant white cuboid architecture, a private marina attracting VIPs like Leonardo DiCaprio, hip nightspots (including an outpost of New York’s 1 Oak) and a sumptuous spa village.

With amazing Beverly Hills-like villas, this is a deeply ambitious hotel full of big-hitters. You can’t quite believe the water is that clear, or the sand is that white. The few buildings that are here are all-white, clean-lined and minimalist – the opposite of the palm-roofed tropical cliché.
