A trip to Huangshan offers the chance to visit the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage site Yellow Mountain – and while it’s about an hour’s drive away, the Banyan Tree currently boasts the area’s best accommodation for Western travellers by far. Built in the style of ancient Hui architecture, the hotel’s comfortable villa apartments – with white walls, curved, ‘horse-head’ roofs, and their own miniature courtyards – look perfectly picturesque amongst Huangshan’s mountainous landscape. The surrounding scenery and historic interest are the star draws here (the stunning, ancient Ming Dynasty-village at the foot of the hotel’s drive welcomes many a painter armed with watercolours and an easel) so be sure to get a spot on the restaurant’s outdoor terrace and drink in the awesome, panoramic views.
