“A regal Venetian hotel in the city's historic heart. Opulence meets artistry in interiors by Patricia Urquiola, highlighting local craftsmanship in every detail. Gourmet dining at VERO, serene al fresco moments in the courtyard, and crafted cocktails at Alchemia bar, create an exquisite stay. ”

Hotel review

Overlooking the lagoon and San Georgio Maggiore this five-star hotel’s Zen frontage exudes a calm refinement with no extra embellishment needed. Five years old and meaning ‘house of God’, it lies in a former home for humble women in need, in a building dating back to 1272.

The ambiance is light and airy, fresh and vital. The foyer, a dramatic supersized former chapel, has a stunning, striking centrepiece chandelier made of 14,000 pieces of Murano glass. Throughout the style is of uncluttered Italian chic: a reading room, hallways with choice artefacts, the Pura Spa and an internal courtyard affording a chance to pause.

My room had dappled aqua-blue wallpaper, made by the textiles company Rubelli and referencing the lagoon. My bathroom featured a stunning Carrara neutral marble flooring and a terracotta-veined basin centrepiece. The hotel has two restaurants: Vero (an abbreviation of ‘Venetian Roots’) with taster menus and views over the lagoon and Essentia which spills outside into the summer courtyard. The latter offers from its confident all-day menu the hotel’s pride and joy: four varieties of tomato from its own herb garden. The staff here, resplendent in stylish brown outfits, are discreet and attentive. The vibe is understated glamour rather than opulent excess. Here at Ca’ di Dio lies truly the authentic soul of Venice.
