On arrival at the Fairmont, Rio de Janeiro, a very superior porter in a top hat leaps out to open the door and perform the meet and greet. Your name is found, everything is taken care of, luggage disappears and you can saunter past the swanky boutiques to the reception (4th floor for Gold members) to check in. It's easy and sets the scene for a luxury stay on Copacabana beach.

Rooms are spacious whichever category chosen with parquet flooring, marble bathrooms, plenty of cupboard space and most with a balcony and view of the beach and the city beyond. But it's the facilities on offer that make the Fairmont stand out. The two swimming pools so that you can catch the sun anytime of the day, both offer poolside dining and the larger one live music (laid back Rio vibe). There's a spa with all the usual treatments, gym with fitness classes, yoga or pilates on offer and three restaurants serving international fare. But that's not all, leave the hotel, cross the road onto the beach - Copacabana beach no less - and there's beach tennis, paddle boarding, surf boards, sun loungers and the Tropique Beach Club for lunch or drinks. Life is pretty easy at the Fairmont. And if you want a little more love upgrade to Gold and enjoy the exclusive club lounge on the 4th floor. An extensive and delicious breakfast is served here and there is nothing which is too much trouble - ask and you will receive. In addition Happy Hour is in fact Happy Two Hours - indulge in a caipirinha or two and a full array of canapés from cold meats, cheese, smoked salmon, breads, olives, crisps - more than enough to be a substitute for dinner.

The Fairmont is a big hotel but there are plenty of helpful and friendly staff so you won't be lost in the crowd.
