In a city full of high-rise hotels, The Gordon House offers something a bit different. White fronted and set over four floors, this was opened to commemorate an adventurous British character called Arthur Gordon who owned the building in the 1900s and caused a stir within the Bombay social scene. The location is great - in the bustling district of Colaba with its colourful market stalls, Aladdin’s Cave-like jewellery dens, scarf, shawl and sandal sellers and popular eateries (including Leopold’s Café popularised by Gregory David Robert’s epic novel Shantaram). It’s close to the iconic Gateway of India, a stone’s throw from the Indian Ocean. Guests can eat in the ground floor Asian-inspired All Stir Fry canteen-like restaurant and have a nightcap in the Havana Café & Bar above it. Clean and comfortable rooms with stucco walls are arranged around a courtyard with a Mediterranean-theme on the second floor, country-style on the third floor and Scandinavian-inspired suites on the top floor. Staff are delightful, attentive, polite and helpful. American buffet breakfast is offered.
