Though operated as a luxury hotel since 2007, this Baroque-era nunnery retains an air of reverence – in part because its on-site church is still a going concern. The building was designed by leading ecclesiastical architect Francesco Borromini and has many of its original features, including pale archways, checkerboard tiled floors and exquisite statuary. The best rooms are those converted from the sisters’ cells – each now featuring a marble en suite – with views over an internal courtyard garden filled with palm, citrus and olive trees. Scattered among them are well-spaced tables, where attentive staff serve a buffet breakfast, casual lunches and aperitivos inspired by home-grown ingredients. For a more formal fine-dining experience, head to basement restaurant Il Ferro e Il Fuoco (‘iron and fire’).
