Built by the Hungarian Freemasons in 1897, this palace in Budapest's 6th district is delightfully eccentric: portraits whose subjects appear to move on their canvases, optical illusions and magic-themed touches scattered throughout. Playful without being try-hard, it’s old-fashioned in a way that makes you smile.
The Great Hall restaurant, its barrel-vaulted ceiling restored and hung with grand chandeliers, serves a generous breakfast buffet with à la carte options - one of the better spreads in the city. Start the day with your in-room Nespresso machine, end it with the ‘tranquillity menu’, selecting your pillow type, earplugs and eye masks. The 82 rooms are divided between three design schemes, suites adding freestanding bathtubs and crystal chandeliers.
The Secret Garden Spa fills what was once the building's central courtyard, lush with greenery and centred on a hot tub, sauna and steam room. Up on the roof, the Sky Garden terrace has panoramic views across the city to St. Stephen's Basilica, and even its own al fresco whirlpool through the warmer months. Best appreciated with a cocktail at sunset.

Not only is Mystery one of the city's newest hotels it's also one of its most imaginative, with décor playing on the building’s history as a 19th-century freemasons’ hall. It has excellent facilities, including a spa and roof terrace, and is well located for the city’s main tourist sites.
