Since its completed refurbishment in 2018, the Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore has bridged the city’s classical heritage with the luxuries of its ultra-modern glamour. Two buildings have been swept into the fold, the Capitol Building and Stamford House, with the alley behind the former been converted into a “lifestyle mall,” with a glass ceiling, cafés, restaurants, retail stores, and direct access to the Capitol Theatre.
To reflect the tastes of the early 20th century, when the three buildings were constructed, the Capitol Kempinski’s rooms are furnished in a colonial art deco aesthetic, with trim lines and a clean colour palate. High ceilings, limestone columns, piano rosewood, and Italian marble floors add a touch of European elegance, while, as an homage to Singapore’s iconic Merlion, fish scale patterns are imbued into the design. Balconies are glass-encased to keep out the humidity, and all bathrooms have deep soaking tubs to cool off in after a walk around the town.
The front-of-house staff—known as the “ladies in red” for their striking dresses—can organize anything, including heritage tours with their in-house historian, motorcycle sidecar tours of the city, and cocktail masterclasses at The Bar at 15 Stamford. The bar also claims to have the city’s largest rum collection, and proffers a rotational drinks menu that focuses on international cocktails.
Each day a heritage afternoon tea is held in the tea room, but if you want a break from the activities and the humidity, there is an on-site spa with a long list of treatments, and a small and secluded rooftop pool.
No hotel is more centrally located, being linked via the City Hall MRT station, and within walking distance of St. Andrew’s Cathedral, the National Gallery, the National Museum of Singapore, and Marina Bay.

Capitol Kempinski is part of a huge lifestyle destination that encompasses a high-end residential apartment, a luxury hotel, a shopping mall and a theatre.

The hotel is in a rather grand art deco building, with a main entrance tucked away in an alley so discreet, most cab drivers miss it. But the subtlety is a clear indication of the hotel's restrained brand of luxury.
