What is there to do in the area?

The Observatory Hotel enjoys a prime position in central Christchurch, offering easy access to the city's best attractions. Within walking distance, guests can explore the stunning Christchurch Botanic Gardens, punt along the serene Avon River, or visit the innovative Cardboard Cathedral. The vibrant Arts Centre and Canterbury Museum (currently closed under full renovation) provide cultural enrichment, whilst the Riverside Market offers local culinary delights. Tram tours with nearby stops provide a splendid overview of the city. For day trips, the picturesque Banks Peninsula, charming Akaroa, and world-class wineries of Waipara Valley are all within easy reach, and the magnificent Southern Alps beckon for more adventurous excursions.

We offer a light continental breakfast showcasing the finest Canterbury and New Zealand produce.

Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally?

No, unfortunately we do not offer an on-site restaurant. However, we do offer breakfast services at The Conservatory and social hour pre-dinner wine in our Drawing Room.  Food and beverage establishments located within the Arts Centre include the Quad Eatery featuring a diverse menu perfect for quick bites and leisure meals, Cellar Door for excellent wines paired with artisanal platters, Frances Nation Grocer offers lovely light lunches.  Food trucks with diverse offerings are also available around the Arts Centre for lunches.  All these are within short walking distance of the Arts Centre.  A 5-minute walk to the city center offers a wide range of restaurants and bars.

Which are your most popular room types, and why?

The Malachite Room is our most coveted accommodation, featuring a spacious attic layout in the Botany building with a comfortable seating area and an exquisite roll-top bath beneath a skylight. The Rose Madder Room, positioned at the head of the principal staircase, boasts a stunning three-bay dormer window that bathes the space in natural light, with a high sloping ceiling and distinctive wooden truss dividing the bedroom from the dressing area. The Veridian, a spacious and illuminated room offering a harmonious blend of comfort and ambiance of timeless charm.  All rooms offer unique architectural character whilst providing all the modern comforts our guest's desire.

What facilities do you have for children and can you fit extra beds in your rooms?

Families are warmly welcomed at The Observatory Hotel.  While there are no facilities for children in the hotel, the Arts Centre offers various events for children, especially during the school holidays.  Please check the Arts Centre website for current events and activities.  We have limited rooms that fit extra beds with a modest additional charge.  Please contact us directly to confirm the availability.
