Close to Plymouth and dartmoor National Park, this 16th century and grade I listed manor house where Queen Elizabeth the first once stayed, is now a country house hotel with a sumptuous Gia spa and a Michelin starred restaurant. Inside feels every bit as historic and regal as the exterior suggests, with wall tapestries, large imposing fire places and chandeliers that wouldn’t look out of place in Henry the eight’s banqueting hall. The two restaurants, the Michelin starred Acleaf and the Mayflower Brasserie, offer two very different dining experiences but both equally satisfying. Drinks are in the main bar or the secret bar which is accessed through a regular looking bookcase. Rooms feature high ceilings and four poster beds in the main hall, and terraces with private jacuzzis in the newly added wing over the spa. The lawns are magnificent and are the perfect place for sipping champagne on a fine day.
