The Egerton House Hotel is one of those five-star hotels in London that manages to fly under the radar; maybe it’s because those in the know want to keep it a secret all for themselves! It’s charming and traditional and with just 28 bedrooms, is a quiet, intimate property whilst at the same time exuding warmth and friendliness. Created from two red brick Victorian townhouses just off the Brompton Road, it’s a haven of peace whether you’re in the area for the shopping or the museums (the V&A is just five minutes’ walk away, and has a long standing partnership with The Egerton House Hotel, ensuring lots of exclusive visits and complimentary tickets).
Akin to a private home rather than a faceless hotel, you’ll be welcomed in the charming reception area which is more like a smart sitting room than a zone for paying your room bill or checking in! The décor throughout reflects the classic feel of the property with plenty of handpicked antiques, beautiful original art on the walls, unusual tactile fabrics including suede wall coverings and elegant neutral colour schemes. Rooms are compact, yet supremely comfortable with Savoir beds, 200 thread count Belgian bed linens, and marble ensuites as standard; the best offer huge bay windows with lovely views over leafy Egerton Gardens. As with all Red Carnation hotels, you’ll find bespoke toiletries and wonderfully fluffy towels and robes.
However, it’s downstairs in the bar/drawing room where many guests and locals think that the magic truly happens. Yes, you can order whatever takes your fancy, but when a bar is renowned for its Martinis, it seems a shame not to oblige (and if you’re interested you can arrange a bespoke Martini masterclass where a hugely knowledgeable member of staff will take you through the history of the Martini and mix you a drink you’ll never forget)! There is no restaurant as such (let’s face it, this area is awash with good places to eat), but if you don’t want to go out, the menu of crowd-pleasing dishes will not disappoint, and the Red Carnation classic Chicken Pot Pie (on the menus across all their properties) is simply delicious. Breakfast is served in the basement, in the dining room. It’s a quiet space with a handful of tables for a relaxed start to the day. There are newspapers on hand, and an à la carte menu which caters to all, whether you prefer the full English or a delicious superfood breakfast to set you up for the coming day.
The Egerton House Hotel is a rare find in London. It’s a top-end stay that’s elegant and relaxed, a quiet haven a million miles from the sometimes brash, glitz and glamour of its neighbourhood. And compared to some of the other five stars in the area, it offers high-end luxury at very reasonable prices.
