Hotel review

Kimolos is one of the Cyclades’ most remote and distinctive islands, reached by ferry in around four hours from Lavrio port, itself about 45 minutes from Athens. Virtually untouched by mass tourism, it remains dry, agricultural and wonderfully undeveloped compared with its better-known Cycladic neighbours.

Espera, the island’s first five-star hotel, sits alone in this landscape with views across the Aegean directly opposite Milos. Low-rise buildings, local stone, earthy tones and extensive planting help it blend naturally into the surroundings, while 15 suites and five rooms provide understated accommodation. There’s an infinity pool, pool bar and wellness experiences including in-room massages and sound-gong sessions. Children aged six and over are welcome, as are pets.

The hotel’s Amoni restaurant is open to non-residents and serves contemporary Greek cuisine using local produce; homemade tarama mousse with oregano crisps is a highlight. Boat trips to nearby uninhabited Polyaigos can also be arranged, while Chorio and its medieval kastro is worth exploring. Note that the final section of road to the hotel is somewhat rough, but suits the property’s secluded setting.
