Mauritius' north-east coast has an appealingly laid-back feel, with little beach houses tucked behind walls of the dark volcanic stone which can be spotted across the island. Casuarina trees and swaying palms line the craggy coastline, with the thatched roofs of La Maison d’Été nestled amongst them. A gorgeous seaside hideaway, the hotel welcomes honeymooners and romantics, as well as families.
Within the grounds of La Maison d’Été are 16 attractive guest rooms, clad in soft coral pink, sage green and ochre yellow. Expect woven rugs, black-and-white photography, baskets and shell jewellery, as well as pretty linens with scalloped edges. Bathrooms offer spacious showers lined with herringbone tiles — and premium and superior rooms boast big bathtubs, too. Step through sliding doors to your own private terrace or balcony, complete with cosy seating for soaking up sea or garden views.
Days are made for lingering, either poolside or on loungers looking towards the sea. La Maison d’Été faces golden sands and glittering blue-green lagoon waters, perfect for keen swimmers, kayakers and paddleboarders. There's snorkelling equipment for those eager to explore underwater, and bicycles to borrow for cycles along the coast road towards picturesque public beaches. The Bras d'Eau National Park is particularly lovely for long walks. Return to the hotel to enjoy rejuvenating massages to the sound of the waves, or for refreshing dips in one of the hotel's two palm-fringed pools.
The gardens themselves are small but well-maintained by a friendly team, and filled with fluttering birds who hop hopefully towards breakfast tables in the early morning sunshine. Breakfast itself is a relaxed affair in the main restaurant, with a menu including plates of fresh fruit, warm pastries and eggs cooked to your preference. For lunch, you can hide away in the shade, or sit with your toes in the sand at the seaside eatery, where zingy salads and seafood await.
Shared spaces include a wonderfully decorated sitting room and an indoor bar with billiards table, carrom board, darts, bookshelves and a television. Hide away here in the heat of the afternoon — this is where the WiFi's at its strongest — curl up with a book when it rains, or challenge friends to a pre-dinner game. The welcoming team are on hand to whip up drinks; this really does feel like the heart of the hotel.
Come evening, most guests gather at candlelit tables in the main restaurant, choosing to savour Mauritian or European dishes with a cold glass of wine. The tuna tartare is sensational, and the Mauritian curries a fantastic insight into the island's unique cuisine. Chat to the team about exploring flavours further through a chef-led cooking class. Round off evenings with your elbows on the bar, tasting spice-infused rum arrangé, sipping craft cocktails and levelling up your own drinks game with the barman's top tips for homemade cane syrup.
Amble along to the beach before returning to your room — on clear nights, the skies above Poste Lafayette are studded with stars, and this little slice of Mauritius feels nothing short of magical.
