Upon arrival guests are escorted along a lavender lined pathway leading up to the resplendent 15th century country manor set in 27 acres of landscaped gardens, orchards and rolling British countryside. You immediately relax and become immersed in the tranquil and luxurious experience that is Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons (in 2019 Le Manoir celebrates its 35th anniversary and 35th year of retaining two Michelin stars; an unprecedented achievement in the United Kingdom). The perfect blend of French sophistication with quintessentially English charm permeates both the hotel and grounds. Armed with maps and wellington boots, provided by the hotel, exploring the grounds is an experience in itself. The 15th century pond and Japanese tea garden evoke contemplation and mindfulness, whilst the organic heritage vegetable garden, herb garden and mushroom valley give you a tantalising insight into the flavour sensations that await in the restaurant. Bee hives, bug hotels and a dedication to home-grown produce demonstrate Raymond Blanc's focus on sustainability; the hotel has admirably achieved their aim of zero waste to landfill. An exquisite mix of eclectic bronze sculptures are tucked away in every corner bringing the gardens to life and adding to the sense of enchantment and fairy tale. Those with green fingers are invited to take a private tour of the gardens or attend the renowned Raymond Blanc Gardening School, and when the weather is fine you can enjoy a game of croquet on the manicured lawns. After exploring the grounds it is time for a soak in the bathtub whilst sampling the array of treats in the room, including Madeira wine, fresh fruit from the gardens, homemade chocolates, sugared almonds and, a personal favourite, Raymond's lemon drizzle cake. Le Manoir houses 32 rooms, each with its own unique identity inspired by Raymond Blanc's travels. Ranging from L'Orangerie garden suite which is light, spacious and tastefully decorated with limed oak and underfloor heated stone floor, complete with marble bathroom, to the delightful 'Hyacinth' in crisp shades of blue and white with victorian furniture. Prior to dining, you can sneak a peek into the lively kitchens, which waft enticing smells. The renowned reputation of Raymond Blanc's two Michelin star restaurant speaks for itself; needless to say the seven course taster menu with carefully selected pairing wines does not disappoint. Each exquisitely presented plate is a triumph, delighting the senses and eliciting excitement for the next culinary delight. Beautiful bespoke crockery depicts the four seasons which inspired the hotel and restaurant. The experience is heightened by the knowledge that the fresh seasonal ingredients have recently been harvested from the kitchen gardens. Staff cannot be commended highly enough - they strike the perfect balance of being warm and personable, whilst professional and discreet. There is everything you would expect of a five star luxury hotel, yet the meticulous attention to detail, ethos and undeniable yet subtle charm of this somewhat magical place takes the guest experience to the next level. It's difficult to find fault! Staying at Le Manoir is an all round cultural celebration of first class cuisine, art and horticulture.
