“A refined lakeside retreat in Hangzhou’s West Lake district, set in a restored century-old villa. The vibe is quiet elegance—think antique accents and clean modern lines. Highlights include a serene infinity pool, Chinese–French dining, and a garden terrace. Peaceful, polished, and well-located”

Hotel review

A classical mansion that fuses the very best of China’s rich history with contemporary comforts and unparalleled luxury. Abutting a Taoist temple, Qiushui is one of several large properties built along the shore of Hangzhou’s West Lake during China’s Nanjing Dacade, from 1927 to 1937. As with so much in China, what appears ancient is infused with a futuristic technological edge – the amenities are top-notch, the wine bar is stocked with a wide selection of international bottles, and the doors activated by facial recognition.

Each large room at Qiushui is based around a particular Chinese writer, artist, or painter, who both lends their name to the space, and influences the unique layout and furnishings. Regardless, each has a spacious living area, two bathrooms, a sizeable table (where a large breakfast – a choice is given between Chinese or Western – is served each morning), and a simply decorated bedroom with an incredibly soft bed.

During their stay, guests are designated both a butler and a driver, who together can organize anything in the Hangzhou area. The hotel also has a special package for trips to the famous Longjing tea village (where Dragon Tea is grown) that includes a tour of the terraces and a private tea ceremony.

For on-site activities, there is a large swimming pool, overhung by a strange drip-shaped sculpture and good for doing lengths. There are also gender-divided steam rooms. The central garden of statues, talon-hipped pagodas, and koi ponds is a public area, off which is the wine bar where, for one hour every day, guests are given free wine and charcuterie. While there is no restaurant within Qiushui, guests can access the neighboring New Hotel Hangzhou to dine on local Hangzhou cuisine in the Hu Yin Tao Tie or Jingguantang restaurants.
