Gazing out over a beach-lined curve of the sparkling Aegean Sea towards island capital Chora’s clutter of white cube houses surmounted by an imposing mediaeval castle, Saluti da Stampalia is a real haven on this eco-friendly island which prides itself on being the first smoke-free atoll in Greece.

Built to resemble a typical local manor house the tall stone building hides a series of cool corridors dotted with pots of fragrant herbs leading to seven spacious high-ceilinged suites.

Style is a subtle blend of old and modern: there are light-filled mezzanine bedrooms and lounges with white-painted wooden floors, vasque sinks with pedestals made from large pithoi pots and in-room sunken whirlpool baths the size of plunge pools.

Icing on the cake: owner Giorgos, who will pick you up from the tiny airport offers plenty of insiders tips to enhance your stay, whilst wife Virginia provides copious breakfasts: farm-fresh eggs, local cheeses, and fresh-baked cakes and pies.
