“A newly restored Victorian townhouse hotel overlooking the River Ness, blending heritage architecture with contemporary boutique atmosphere; ideal for travellers seeking an intimate Highland base with excellent Indian influenced cuisine. ”

Hotel review

Set within two adjoining Victorian townhouses dating from 1874, the Ambassador Hotel occupies a prime riverside position in central Inverness, within easy walking distance of the city’s cultural landmarks. The recent £6m restoration preserves the building’s classic architectural features – high ceilings, sash windows and a formal façade – while introducing a Highlandesque interior of antiques, tartans and contemporary comforts.

Each of the fourteen rooms are individually conceived, with thematic references to travel, exploration and the surrounding landscape, resulting in a boutique feel that distinguishes it from more conventional city hotels. Leitmotifs such as Tartan, Maharaja, and Czarina, give the rooms a unique identity, each with thematic wallpaper and a distinct mosaic above the bed, giving the property a narrative-led identity without tipping into kitsch. Marbled bathrooms in each room and contemporary lighting keep the spaces in the here and now.

Public spaces include a snug library-style cocktail bar and the first-rate Indian restaurant, "Talk of the Town", based on the now defunct Bombay establishment. Service is notably attentive and personable, reinforcing the hotel’s residential feel. Best suited to couples or short-stay visitors seeking character, location and a strong sense of place.
