“A well-named hotel in a historic, former railway-company HQ, this place offers five-star levels of service, a spa and a choice of dining options. Bedrooms are vast, comfortable and designed for the modern traveller.”

Hotel Review

It's impossible to miss this building as you walk into the city from the station; the headquarters of the former North Eastern Railway Company, it was built to reflect the company's wealth, a towering block of red-brick and handsome stonework. Transformed into a hotel in 2010, original features of parquet flooring, decorative plasterwork, heavy-duty panelled doors and magnificently wide corridors form the background to a modern colour scheme of charcoal and purple. Bedrooms are spread between the original building and an annexed 1970s office block. All are ridiculously large, with modern clean-lined furniture and well thought-out design but unfortunately rather corporate and bland in feel. Service is five-star, with staff appearing just when you need them, and happy to help with any request. There's also a spa in the original vaults, and a whisky lounge with some 100 to work your way through. Food is either a smart, tasting-menu only option or a more relaxed - and fun - Yorkshire tapas-style offering.
