“An elegant, late 18th century, neo-classical palace, set amongst lawns and roaming peacocks in the shadow of the Pena Palace in Sintra. A destination immortalised by Byron as a ‘glorious Eden’ in his poem Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. Pool, tennis courts, and an excellent restaurant.”

Hotel Review

Built in 1787 for the Dutch consul in Portugal, this feather-light palace was turned into a hotel in 1953 and extensively restored recently. The elegant interiors have frescoed walls, chandliers, rich silks and 18th century antiques. The rooms have every modern comfort, whilst maintaining palatial standards with things such as their exquisite linen, trimmed with a black border and their wooden bed heads with marquetry inlay.

There is a swimming pool in the lovely gardens and a spa with treatments from Biologique Recherche.

At the Seteais Restaurant, dining is a refined take on traditional Portuguese dishes such as tiger prawn, crispy coriander risotto, pea and shellfish sauce or suckling pig or Bacalhau (codfish) with crispy, smoked ham. Do try the local Colares wine. The Bar serves snacks like steak sandwich or breaded prawns with sweet chilli sauce on the terrace outside with beautiful views over the garden.

Colares Wines showcases one of Europe’s oldest wine-producing regions, neighbouring Colares, and the Ramisco and Malvasia grape varieties. Guests can enjoy wine tastings in the Seteais Colares DOC room in the hotel. Fine local wines are accompanied by tapas and excellent tasting menus.

Which are your most popular room types, and why? The palace has 30 spacious and well-lit rooms, each unique in its decoration and view. All rooms are different but the superior rooms with valley view and premium rooms are the most popular room types.

There are 5 premium rooms, each one with a special characteristic like an old bathtub or a private terrace. Regarding the valley view superior rooms, they all offer a breath-taking views over the Sintra valley to the Atlantic ocean.
