If sister hotel Torel Saboaria celebrates the city's artisanal soul, Torel Avantgarde turns the dial up to full glam. One of Porto's sultriest hotels, it’s all sweeping Douro River views and fine, modern interiors. My Hedy Lamarr-themed Royal Suite came with a heavy marble bathtub hidden behind ornate doors, a fireplace and a knockout river view despite a downpour.
The Camellia Garden is set back from the Douro panorama with loungers shaded by flowering trees between the small indoor and outdoor pools. Restaurant Digby is named after an English wine bottle innovator and reimagines traditional Portuguese flavours, while a cocktail bar lends atmosphere. Individually designed, sumptuous rooms pay tribute to avant-garde icons (Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Coco Chanel, Hitchcock, Simone de Beauvoir and so on). Interiors earn their names through Portuguese craftsmanship, cork, rich textures, and cool marks of eco-conscious luxury throughout. Take in those stellar views through glass walls at breakfast, music propelling you into the city for wine tasting or a pleasantly aimless meander.

This eclectic and charming 47-room hotel offers river views and strikingly designed rooms that reject minimalism in favour of bold colours. There is an emphasis on comfort, with handwoven rugs, soft bathrobes and superb beds. The restaurant’s food and wines celebrate its Portuguese identity.
