On Argentina’s North Western border with Chile, Barreal sits beside the beautiful Río de los Patos (river). The area is renowned for its comfortable climate, the purity of its air, the friendliness of its inhabitants and its picturesque setting, with stunning views of the Cordillera de Ansilta, a wide swathe of the Andes featuring seven majestic peaks ranging from altitudes of 5130 to 5885m. Warmth comes with rain in Barreal, so although October to March boasts temperatures in the late teens to mid-twenties (degrees celcius), these are also the months with the highest chance of rain. To avoid the showers, aim to visit between May and August when temperatures are generally in the early teens.
What not to miss:
Parque Nacional El Leoncito has it all, mountains, great views of the Andes, a waterfall and even an observatory. Visit for a day or take along a tent and get back to basics!

For a chic hideaway
Look no further than Posada de Los Patos. A stunning and reasonably priced hideaway, secluded amongst the foothills of the Andes and the perfect spot to relax in. The design is simple and sympathetic, the pool is refreshing and the food is exquisite.
The easiest way to reach Barreal is to catch the bus from San Juan, which takes around three hours.

For warm weather plan to visit between November and February, when averages peak at around 28 degrees celcius, but this also when Barreal experiences most rain! July is the driest month, but average highs are only around 20 degrees.
