About Richmond, TAS

Just 25 minutes north-east of Hobart, the pretty riverside town of Richmond is tucked into Tasmania's Coal River Valley. Many visitors zip across from Hobart for the day, but our Gurus suggest spending a few days exploring the region’s heritage landmarks and picturesque natural landscapes — ideally whilst based at one of the best places to stay in Richmond.

Stroll around town independently or take an expert-led guided tour to see Australia's oldest intact jail — dating back to 1825 — as well as its oldest remaining Catholic Church, St John’s. Richmond Bridge, the town’s most famous landmark, was built of sandstone by convicts in the 1820s, when this now laid-back little town was amongst the biggest hubs in Tasmania. The model village of Old Hobart, recreating the town as it stood in the 1820s, is fascinating.

Beyond Richmond itself, you’ll find the fantastic vineyards of the increasingly popular Coal River Valley wine region, many of which offer excellent tours and tastings. There are some great farm shops in the area, too, showcasing top seasonal produce and delicious cheeses. If you’re travelling as a family, take the little ones to spot animals at the Zoodoo Wildlife Park, or to visit the unusual Pooseum. The Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary is ideal for day trips, and foodies and museum-goers will be delighted by Hobart. It's also very tempting to simply kick back at our pick of the best places to stay in Richmond, gathering for barbecues as the sun slips over the horizon in a beautiful part of Australia.
