The area was first settled by United Empire Loyalists - refugees from the American Revolution and War of Independence after 1776, who came North to farm. Later, people came from America’s Southern states.
In 1852 the St. Lawrence and Atlantic railroad arrived and the following decades witnessed a building boom. In the 1880’s one Dr Clark of Baltimore came for a holiday with his family. Enchanted he built a second home here and began a trend, being followed by many of the great and good of Maryland. As a result, North Hatley boasts many impressive villas. And these led to sports clubs, library, golf course, luxury hotels and steamboats.
North Hatley has interesting boutique shops, galleries and cafes and is home to many artists and craftspeople. It has been the location for many films, including ‘Secret Window’ with Johnny Depp.
