About Belle Ile en Mer

You don't need much more than the name to sell this 'beautiful island in the sea' situated just off the coast of Brittany. This island's nearside coastline is calm and sandy and dotted with little ports painted in pale, seaside colours, while the ocean side is more rocky and dramatic. So you get the best of both worlds, from calm sunbathing to windswept walks. The majority of the best places to stay on Belle-Île-en-Mer are on the eastern, Brittany-side coastline while there's an excellent range, from traditional seaside hotels to romantic B&Bs, perched dramatically on the headland.

As well as Le Palais on the eastern side, directly opposite Quiberon, Belle-Île-en-Mer has a town on the west side, Sauzon, which is much smaller and very charming. The town names somehow lack the obvious charms of the island's with Côte Sauvage and Grands Sables being perfect descriptions of the dangerous cliffs on one side and the long, placid beaches on the other.

Belle-Île-en-Mer's main sights are the Aiguilles de Port Coton, a collection of sharp rock stacks which have been an inspiration for countless artists and photographers, the citadel of Le alias and the Grotte de 'l'Apothicairerie on the southwestern coast.

Belle-Île-en-Mer is another of Brittany's great second home towns and the island population increases about tenfold during the summer months. The influx of summer visitors are treated not just to the island's day-to-day charms but also a summer opera festival and several music concerts.

So if you want to book a bed in one of the best places to stay in Belle Ile en Mer, you'll need to be organised and plan well ahead. Alternatively come in quieter months, when it will feel like you have the place to yourself.
