About Dinan

A beautiful walled city with an exceptionally rich architectural and cultural heritage, Dinan prospered as a trading hub from the 14th to 18th Centuries, when ships laden with linen, leather and wool sailed down the Rance River towards the sea. Today, visitors can stay in converted historic homes-turned-hotels and charming guesthouses close to the medieval centre and the old port. Whether you’re travelling as a couple, or with friends and family, our selection of the best places to stay in Dinan includes some superb spots for soaking up the city’s very special atmosphere.

Surrounded by three kilometres of ramparts and dominated by 14th century Dinan Castle — now a marvellous museum — the city is ideal for history buffs and keen walkers alike. Take a guided tour, or stroll past the half-timbered houses which line the Rue de Jeruzal, home to artisanal boutiques aplenty, and on to Place des Cordeliers and Place des Merciers. St Saviours Basilica is a particularly impressive landmark. If you’re travelling with little ones, the Rail Museum and the Parc des Petits Diables are highlights.

Amble along the riverbank to the estuary, or take a boat tour on the Rance for views of the city from the water. Kayaking and sailing trips can also be arranged, as can day-long excursions to St-Malo, Dinard or the Mont Saint-Michel. In the evenings, join locals at the restaurants and bars which line the streets overlooking the pretty port, before returning to one of the best places to stay in Dinan.
