About Le Lavandou

A small and quaint fishing village in the heart of the French Riviera, Le Lavandou makes for the perfect seaside holiday. Sitting alongside a 12km stretch of beautiful coastline, the town is a quiet and picturesque escape from the humdrum of modern life. From sunbathing on one of the many beaches, sampling jams and cheeses at the Thursday market, hiking through the Maures Massif or taking boat trips out to its neighbouring islands, there's plenty to do here. Our collection of the best places to stay in Le Lavandou range from charming and well priced to utterly luxurious.

The area has been inhabited for many years: during the ancient world, there was a flourishing resort set up by the Greeks at Alconis. The town itself has long been a fishing village and is now also a major international marina and sport fishing port. In effect, Le Lavandou is married to the sea.

The seaside restaurants that flank the promenade are divine, supplied daily by local fishermen who also supply the Thursday market, a classically Provencal affair, choc-a-bloc with cheeses and meats and wines. As the evening draws in, this quaint little town undergoes a metamorphosis and the young and old alike drink and dance in the streets, while the waterfront is bright with the lights of bars and discos.

Sadly there is very little to see, historically-speaking, in town. Over the years, Le Lavandou has been burned down by the Bourbons, pillaged by pirates, ransacked by foreign navies and, finally, it was bombed in 1944. However, Le Lavandou's charm lies elsewhere - in its beaches.

With 12km of coastline that's both sandy and rugged, complete with small inlets and secluded coves, its beaches boast a level of intimacy that's increasingly hard to find in that tourist honeytrap, the Cote d'Azur. There are nudist beaches, like the Plage du Layet, and beaches full of watersports, like that of the Plage de Cavaliere. Visitors can also take boat trips out to the nearby idyllic Iles d'Or (and spot dolphins and whales along the way) or hike the trails that snake through the Maures Massif.

What not to miss

  • Attend the Thursday market, a classically Provencal affair.
  • Take a boat trip out to the neighbouring islands - maybe you'll spot a dolphin.
  • Sunbathe on one of her many beaches.
  • Hike up the Maures Massif.
  • Check out the Church of St. Louis, built in the 19th-century
  • Cycle on one of the many trails through the Maures Massif.
