Stepantsminda (know to the locals as Kazbegi) is a small town in North eastern Georgia which sits on the banks of the Terek river, just 10 kilometres from the Russian border. It is named after a monk, Stephan, who constructed a hermitage here and It subsequently became a stopping off point on the Georgian Military Highway.
