About Hornbach

Right by the French border, just south of the Palatinate Forest, the town of Hornbach was founded by a monastery in the 8th Century.

The monastery gets top billing for several reasons: firstly, it has survived all that time and is currently being used as a hotel (one of our choices for the best places to stay in Hornbach), restaurant and cafe - with obvious, sensitive renovations made; secondly Hieronymus Bock, considered to be the world's first modern botanist, lived in the monastery during the 16th Century.

The oldest bit of the town stands on a hill, protected by its ancient stone fortifications. Inside this enclosed area you'll also find several churches, as well as the monastery, and the historic - and current - town hall.

For Foodies

  • Losch Fur Freunde is a strikingly designed country house hotel with a gourmet table d'hôte and a fabulous spa. This is a wonderful escape, with just 15 rooms, the beautiful surroundings and a Michelin starred chef.

For the monastery

  • To be in thick of things book a room in the converted monastery Kloster Hornbach. Here you'll find chic interiors and a superb spa for some serious pampering. The food's not too shabby either.
