About Tomonoura

Tucked away on the southern tip of the Numakuma Peninsula, Tomonoura is a charming port town with sweeping Seto Inland Sea views and a timeless, old-Japan feel. While quieter than nearby hotspots, it’s big on atmosphere and offers hotels for every traveller—romantic ryokans perfect for couples, sleek design stays with sea views, and welcoming spots ideal for families. For traditional vibes, the historic town centre is best; for modern comfort, look toward the waterfront’s stylish boutique options.

Tomonoura is a compact, walkable port town that’s perfect to explore on foot or by bicycle. You can soak up the history at Fukuzenji Temple and the 17th-century Taichoro, where the views are as famous as the building itself, or wander up to Abuto Kannon perched on a hilltop above the sea. Early risers are rewarded with glowing sunrises over Sensui-jima, while evenings are best spent watching the sun sink behind the Joyato Stone Lighthouse. Food and drink are just as much a part of the experience here, from freshly caught seafood served in local restaurants to a sip of homeishu, a sweet herbal liqueur unique to the area. After a day of exploring, it’s easy to unwind in a hot spring bath or spa at one of Tomonoura’s inns before sitting down to another round of regional specialties.
