About Tauranga
Tauranga is the largest city on the beautiful Bay of Plenty, growing larger and richer by the day because of its busy port. But it’s not industry which shapes this city these days, it’s beach seeking holidaymakers. The waterfront is a wonderfully modern collection of bars, restaurants and hotels - and this is where you’ll find some of the best places to stay in Tauranga.
Tauranga’s five kilometre long harbour is protected by Matakana Island, and the city’s name comes from the M?ori meaning ‘sheltered anchorage’. It is the beautiful, sheltered beaches which are making the city grow.
Most of the best beaches are around Mount Maunganui, which is by the harbour mouth. They’re loved by surfers and divers as well as those looking for sunshine and sand.
Have a walk up Mount Maunganui, which ends in a great lookout.
There’s a lot more to do here beside relax on the beaches or in a waterfront bar, though. You should definitely take a trip out to White Island, an active volcano just waiting to blow. You have to wear a mask and a hardhat, and climb a steep ladder and walk on rusty bridges, but it’s worth it to walk on a real live volcano.
Tauranga also has a great art gallery and a spooky old fort, dating from the Maori wars, called Monmouth Redoubt.
What not to miss:
- Take a hike up up Mount Maunganui and enjoy the spectacular views.
- Lounge on the large swathes of white sand beach.
- Grab a board and try your hand at surfing.
- Walk across seemingly perilous bridges on White Island, an active volcano.
The city is a very popular destination, so if you want to ensure a bed in one of the best places to stay in Tauranga, get organised and book early.
