
Weybridge was name simply because there was a bridge over the river Wey. However contemporary Weybridge has spread so that it’s now on both the Wey and the Thames. Aside from its rather lovely riverside spot, Weybridge is also known for Brooklands and the Booklands Museum, the London Bus Museum, and for being close to the gardens at Wisley. Brooklands was the world’s first purpose-built motor-racing track, and was used to develop the Blue Bird — which was once the holder of the land speed record — and later to produce early aircraft, including the Sopwith Camel, the Wellington bomber and the Hurricane fighter plane. Mercedes-Benz purchased the old runway when the airport closed, and has turned it into another car museum.
