There’s nothing quite like a relaxing swim after a hard day’s sight-seeing around York. York’s original station hotel, a grand Victorian affair, has been converted into The Principal, a large and sleek, luxury hotel. The basement has been converted into a leisure centre with pool and gym, and makes a refreshing place to re-charge after a day walking York’s streets. And it’s a good entertainment if you've got children in tow!
The vaults of the equally luxurious The Grand (just across the road from The Principal) have also been converted into a subterranean pool and fitness area, together with a small spa. These are wonderfully atmospheric and are just the reviver you might need after a day’s sight-seeing and before dinner.

Just outside the city centre

If you want a pool with a view, head to Middlethorpe Hall, just 10 minutes from the city centre. The pool and spa are in the converted cottages of this elegant William and Mary house which sits wrapped in gardens and parkland. With vast sitting rooms scattered with deep armchairs, bedrooms dotted with antiques, this is definitely the choice for total relaxation.
