About Paxos

The myth of Paxos recounts that Zeus, in a fit of rage, hurled a little chunk of Corfu southwards — just a stone’s throw away. A mere 14 kilometres from Corfu, lovely Paxos has an appealingly laid-back feel, perfect for those seeking an understated island hideaway. Too small to need its own airport, this little Ionian Island has escaped over-development, and the best places to stay in Paxos remain small, intimate and characterful.

Most of life on Paxos is clustered around the island’s three villages, all looking towards the Greek mainland. Gaios, the main town, is home to the island’s ferry port, and has a picturesque strip of pink-and-white buildings framed by verdant hills and olive groves. Lakka, to the north, has the island’s best sailing harbour and a great selection of bars and tavernas, whilst little Loggos showcases Paxos’ Italian and Ottoman heritage through its own group of lively eateries. Explore all three communities for a real sense of the island’s cuisine and culture over the course of your holiday.

Discover the rest of Paxos’ undulating coastline by boat, dipping into hidden coves and pretty bays with turquoise waters and dramatic white cliffs. The nearby island is Antipaxos is ideal for days trips. If you’re dreaming of sunbathing, swimming and sandcastle-building, make for Voutoumi, Erimitis or Avlaki beaches, where you can also snorkel. Venture inland to follow ancient paths between olive groves, around windmill-topped green hills and along limestone clifftops. Originally mule tracks for transporting agricultural produce, these routes criss-cross the island, meaning that the possibilities for wandering are almost endless. Better yet, some pass close to the best places to stay in Paxos, so you can sink right into the pool upon your return.
