About California

Sun-drenched beaches, breath-taking natural vistas on a grand scale and bustling city life, California has everything. It’s the largest state by population and where you’ll find the Golden Gate Bridge, Malibu, the Napa Valley, Yosemite National Park and Disneyland. Our Guru’s recommendations for the best places to stay in California range from glamorous resorts of the golden era of Hollywood, cheap and cheerful beachside B&Bs, Rodeo Drive residences, to remote vineyard hotels surrounded by lush farmland .... and everything in between.

Some of our Californian collections:

The famous “California state of mind” is about embracing all of the many faces of the Californian experience from vast desert wastes (for a gentle entry to desert life stay in Palm Springs) to primaeval forests teeming with wildlife. From pristine lake land to the residual heritage of the 17th Century Spanish missionaries, from the wild west of the 19th Century Gold Rush to today’s vibrant urban culture.

So whether you want to climb in the Sierra Nevada, whose Mount Whitney is the US’s highest peak outside Alaska, or to explore the monumental Yosemite National Park or Disneyland at Anaheim, or gasp at the giant California Redwood trees of Sequoia National Park, enter San Francisco by the Golden Gate Bridge, or shop till you drop on Beverly Hill’s celebrated Rodeo Drive, The Hotel Guru knows that the best places to stay in California are diverse and dynamic and imbued with the pulsating energy of this giant theme park of the American Dream.

Where to Stay - which town/region?

  • From the music and movies to the clothes and food, Los Angeles has an energy and promise it's impossible to duplicate. Yes, in L.A. the inexpensive sits comfortably beside the expensive. Little old delis and hot dog vans beside super clubs and Michelin starred restaurants. Markets beside big brand boutiques. Museums beside cinemas - but then this IS L.A...
  • San Francisco has the cable cars, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, gay rights, foggy vintage beauty, lovely liberal attitudes, fabulous food, the freshest new technologies and a multitude of microclimates.
  • San Diego famously has SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo, but it also has excellent beaches, a rich cultural life, lively nightlife - probably due to the numerous universities - a great Old Town and some fantastic museums.
  • Long-established as America’s dream factory, California is perhaps most associated with perpetual sunshine, beaches and beautiful bodies. If that’s your thing, then there is a wealth of ocean-view hotels to choose around Big Sur, Malibu, Santa Barbara, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Laguna Beach, San Diego, Santa Monica and Los Angeles’s Venice Beach. Newport is elegant too, more port than a beach town, but the views are big and inspiring, and the vibe is polished and relaxed. And Santa Catalina Island is just offshore and perfect for a short escape with lots of watersport activity.
  • But the surfers’ paradise, as projected by Hollywood, is just one of the identities embraced by the third largest state in the union. California is no less of a magnet for nature lovers: it’s hard to believe that California, the US’s most populous state, should have areas that are described as “wilderness” - apart from the desert of course - but the famed coastal area south of Monterey fits that description. The Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, with an 80-foot waterfall as its focal point, is a stunning area of coastal beauty and the drive along Bixby Bridge is a marvel. Along with the obvious choices of Yosemite National Park, the Death Valley National Park and the Sequoia National Forest.
  • This is also a state for wine lovers. Napa is probably the best-known wine centre in the Napa Valley, then there’s foodie favourite Healdsburg, in the heart of the Sonoma. Though St Helena, which is pretty, popular and high-end, Yountville with more Michelin stars than any other American town and old fashioned Calistoga are also good places to start.
  • In winter California is also beloved by skiers. Consider Lake Tahoe, Heavenly and the Squaw Valley.
  • Then there’s Silicon Valley and San Jose… And notice that we hadn’t yet mentioned the cities…

California is a large state with many different things to see and do. Use our guide to the best places to stay in California and start to plan your West Coast adventure!

The Best Places to Stay in California

For Los Angeles

  • The Line Hotel is an uncompromisingly stylish and minimalist designer hotel in the heart of LA’s Koreatown. For urban fun-seekers, it is ideally placed for one of this metropolis’s most exciting districts, which claims to be the “only genuinely 24-hour district” in the city. This is where the nightlife is as hot as the kimchi.

For San Francisco

  • The Taj Campton Place in Union Square is an elegant hotel known for its hyper-attentive service and Michelin starred restaurant.
  • The Hotel Vitale on the waterfront is a sleek, modern 200 room hotel with stylish decor and impressive views of the bay. There’s also a beautiful rooftop terrace and an indoor/ outdoor spa. But best of all you’re right by the trolley-car linking the city centre with Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and Treasure Island. This is also one of the best places to stay in San Francisco for foodies.
  • The Inn at the Presidio Is a red brick hotel in the Presidio National Park, right by the Golden Gate Bridge. Formally officer’s quarters this is the only accommodation in the park and its sleek, stylish rooms offer wonderful views.

For San Diego

  • Located in the heart of San Diego’s famously lively and cultural Gaslamp Quarter, the Andaz is pitched at adventurous spirits and stylish urban explorers. Just minutes from local attractions such as the world famous San Diego Zoo, its also ideally placed for the bars, clubs and shops. If you want to go further than the hotel’s highly recommended RoofTop600 lounge, the staff pride themselves in guiding guests to the best “locals only” spots.
  • Tower 23 isn’t quite what it sounds - it’s not really a tower but a beautifully designed three storey building right on the seafront. The 44 rooms have floor to ceiling sea views and there are in-room spa treatments to sample and a restaurant worth trying.

For Santa Barbara

  • For something truly special book the San Ysidro Ranch. Nestled in the Montecito foothills, set amid 500 acres overlooking the Pacific. It can do some serious name-dropping (with the likes of JFK and Laurence Olivier as former guests) and it's easy to see why - gorgeous rooms, beautiful gardens, muslin draped four posters and gourmet cuisine.
  • Canary Santa Barbara is a beachfront hotel with 97 generously sized rooms - many with stunning views - a rooftop pool and a restaurant specialising in local produce, which naturally includes a lot of seafood.

For Beach Boys and Girls

  • Shutters on the Beach, Los Angeles with its tagline “Where nothing stands between you and the sand” is a supremely stylish beachfront property combining laid-back beach style with five star amenities - three gourmet restaurants, a spa, fitness centre, pool and private beach. Rooms are classic California cool with nautical colours and balconies. A short drive from Beverly Hills and Hollywood it’s a favourite retreat of the stars, as well as offering close proximity to designer shops and its own vibrant nightlife.
  • The Oceana Beach Club Hotel is a bright and lively luxury boutique hotel by Santa Monica Beach with wonderful Pacific views. Rooms in classic modern American style create a sense of Mad Men-era sunny optimism and are full of thoughtful touches and comfortable features. With a heated pool and only seconds from the beach, it's perfect for both relaxing and romantic outings.

For Food and Wine Lovers

  • L'Auberge in Carmel-by-the-Sea is a luxurious 20-room property close to the beach. As well as offering in-room spa treatments and plenty of charm there is also an award-winning restaurant, The Aubergine, which can make you a lovely picnic for the beach.
  • Napa Valley’s Carneros Inn offers rustic chic just under an hour from downtown San Francisco. Famous for its Farm at Carnero's fine dining restaurant it’s not for the budget traveller, but ideal for those treating themselves. Relax on your stone-paved private terrace and admire the rolling vineyards in total comfort.
  • Miliken Creek Inn is an adults-only retreat in the heart of wine country. Come here for a grown up break with fabulous spa-treatments and wine tasting galore.
  • The Hotel Healdsburg is a modern boutique hotel surrounded by lovely gardens. There's a shady, wisteria clad terrace and the 55 rooms are simple and elegant. Its Dry Creek Kitchen is renowned for seasonal dishes and there's also Pizzando for fabulous wood fired pizzas.
  • The Napa River Inn is right on the river and has 66 rooms with charming, old-fashioned decor as well as a Michelin rated restaurant. And you’re within a stroll of around 20 different tasting rooms.

For Ocean Views

  • Mission Ranch is situated amid 22 acres and boasts views over not only the ocean, but also Point Lobos and Carmel River Beach. The property was saved by Carmel's famous mayor (Clint Eastwood) and now offers a wide range of accommodation.
  • Four Seasons The Biltmore in Santa Barbara is a Mediterranean feeling resort with 20 acres of lush gardens and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. The Mediterranean theme spills over into the beautiful, seasonal, organic Italian restaurant and there’s also a brilliant spa.

For an Historic Stay

  • Carmel-by-the-Sea has long been a stopping point along the Californian coastline and the Coachman's Inn embraces the town's itinerant culture. Awash with character, the hotel boasts charming rooms, a deluxe spa facility and is located at the heart of the town.
  • 1906 Lodge has been meticulously restored. Located on the historic Coronado Island, the decor is understated, elegant and modern. This boutique hotel is ideally located for exploring the vibrant Island and is within walking distance of all the sights and beaches.
  • Palm Springs’ newly renovated Sparrows Lodge has been painstakingly restored to its 1950s heyday. Rooms are full of wood, exposed stone and flag stoned floors.

For the Great Outdoors

  • High in the Sierra Nevada, above the pristine waters of Lake Tahoe, The Ridge offers year-round activities from skiing and other winter sports to boating, paddle-boarding, kayaking and hiking. Or you could just admire the spectacular views.
  • Where better to enjoy the wide open vistas of this Californian wilderness than at Treebones Resort, one of the pioneers of the “glamping” movement. This family-run resort has been a local phenomenon since it opened in 2004. The owners see themselves as continuing the environmentally in-tune spirit of Big Sur’s original Native American residents.
  • Big Sur’s Ventana Inn and Spa is a fantastic place to escape to for an adults-only break. There are just 34 rustic boutique rooms, complete with hot tubs and open fireplaces, plus a romantic restaurant. Surrounded by 243 acres of land and boasting wonderful mountain views.

For Agri-Chic

  • The Carneros Inn, in the Napa Valley, has been converted from a farm and the collection of cottages, suites and rooms are modern and stylish. There’s also a choice of restaurants, an award-winning spa, expansive gardens with three pools and a number of hot tubs. As well as wine tastings they also offer cheesemaking classes.
  • The Auberge du Soleil in St Helena is a luxurious boutique hotel with breathtaking views over olive groves and vines and an outstanding restaurant.
  • Calistoga's Chateau de Vie is a peaceful, four bedroom chateau surrounded by lavender filled gardens. Large rooms overlook the vineyards beyond, there’s a gourmet breakfast to start the day with and a spa and pool to finish.

For the Snow

  • The Ridge at Tahoe is at the foot of the Sierra Nevada overlooking Lake Tahoe. In winter it offers great access to the slopes and a ’ski paradise’, and in summer there are three tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pools and watersports on the lake. There are almost 800 rooms, plus a large restaurant and deli.
  • Cottage Inn is a cosy B&B in a log cabin nestled into the forest, just a stone's-skim from Lake Tahoe. There are 22 large, wood-furnished rooms with fireplaces and spa tubs. This is the perfect place to get back to nature.

For an Apartment or Villa

  • If you’d prefer to stay in an apartment or private villa we recommend you visit our online partner booking.com.

Travel Information

  • Los Angeles International Airport, or LAX, is California’s busiest hub, but San Francisco Airport, San Diego Airport, Oakland Airport and San Jose Airport might all be more useful, depending on where you’re starting your explorations of this state.
  • If you want to hire a car - which we strongly advise if you plan to explore the state properly - we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
  • California is known for its sunshine, so weather-wise there’s really not a bad time to visit. April and May are particularly nice if your aim is to see quite a bit of the state. September and October are also good months to choose if you’re looking for decent prices and shorter queues. The summer months are the most popular time to visit.
