What the Hotel Du Vin group does best is transform historic buildings into airy, contemporary hotels without sacrificing their character; in Cheltenham, it has succeeded in spades. The hotel occupies an impressive white stucco house which now sports a dramatic modern spiral staircase. It is stylishly furnished from top to bottom, using horses as a leitmotif, evocative of the city’s famous race course. There are two convivial bars (one devoted to grape, the other grain), and a bistro style restaurant with a fair-weather terrace. Large and well-equipped, the 49 rooms have plenty of cupboard space and comfortable beds; some also have twin rolltop baths, placed romantically side by side. Delightful staff.
