Hotel Review

The hinterland of Hradčany (the castle district) is the leafiest and most peaceful part of Prague. The atmosphere here is more that of a quiet country village than heaving city. Set amongst narrow cobbled streets, U Raka (‘The Crayfish’) is Prague’s only wooden building still standing, now a hotel with a distinctive, rustic charm. It is owned by the Pauls, a family of artists whose works can be seen in the hotel’s small gallery, and run with benevolent efficiency by father and daughter, Alexander and Agneta. The decoration is spot on: wrought-iron beds, simple wood furniture and crisp white linen complementing the timber beams and exposed brickwork. The best room has its own well, conservatory and log fire. Breakfast (a slap-up start to the day) is served in a tiny cosy candlelit room. Snacks outside in summer.
