About Kastellorizo

Just two kilometres from the Turkish coast, Kastellorizo has a very different feel from most Greek islands. One of the least-visited of the popular Dodecanese, it’s a wonderful land of bright turquoise waters, sandy beaches and arid hills. The island’s fascinating history is another big draw, with ancient fortresses, domed churches and colourful villages. Our pick of the best places to stay in Kastellorizo embodies this heritage perfectly, with beautifully decorated rooms in a historic home.

Occupied in turn by the Venetians, the Turks, the French, the Italians and the English — and then bombed by German forces during the Second World War — the island has a turbulent history, and a rich culture of mixed influences. Kastellorizo’s largest town is a maze of red-roofed houses painted white, yellow, pale blue and pink, clustered around a blue bay studded with bobbing fishing boats. Its architecture feels far more Eastern than most Greek islands — best appreciated on a guided tour or relaxed amble with an ice cream.

Venture up to the ruined 14th-century Castello Rosso, admire the Byzantine Church of St George, and delve into the wonderful Museum of Kastellorizo over the course of your visit. To the west of town, you’ll find the remnants of an ancient acropolis, too. Soak up the sunshine at the beach, or take boat trips out to impressive sea caves, including the dazzling Blue Grotto. Cool off with a dip in the sea mere metres from the best place to stay in Kastellorizo, before sipping a sundowner on the terrace.
