Photo of Domaine de Rhodes

“Set in wooded farmland on a lush island in the Rhone, Domaine de Rhodes is a pastoral retreat only ten minutes from the sights of Avignon. Its peaceful gardens, shaded by tall plane trees, are perfect for lazy afternoons, and there's a pool.”

Hotel Review

Built in the 16th century as an aristo's hunting lodge, the two-storey building has mellow limestone walls and green-painted shutters. Its outlines are softened by honeysuckle and ivy. Inside are exposed beams and tiled floors, a comfortable lounge with state-of-the-art hifi and music library, and a small TV nook with DVD players and paperback library. All five room – each named after a local personality – are large, with huge beds and reproduction furniture. Bathrooms have stand-alone tubs and some have walk-in rain showers. Breakfast (buffet style, with cold cuts, cheeses, fresh bread and a plethora of home-made jams) is the only meal served, but for families and couple who like to cook there are self-catering cottages and an open-air kitchen with microwave, fridge and grill, and there's a good restaurant ten minutes' walk from the hotel. There's no bar, but an 'honour fridge' is stocked with wine, beer and soft drinks. Couples looking for a romantic space with a difference can stay in a roulotte (gypsy-style caravan) painted in bright tropical colours.
