There’s an ease to Hotel du Lac that’s rare these days. Set directly on Lake Garda, this Venetian-red 19th-century villa has been in the Arosio family for two generations, which explains the warm welcome from Valerio and team. There are 12 rooms in total, six with lake views and either a balcony or terrace. Interiors are traditional and individual, with period furnishings, antiques, original tiled floors, and bright, spacious bathrooms. Breakfast is a generous buffet: chia pudding, homemade jams, biscuits and cakes, scrambled eggs and bacon. Get there early to bag a table on the terrace that hovers above the lake. It’s a magical way to start the day, with the water almost at eye level. Later, the small bar and roof terrace shaded by a canopy of kiwi vines come into their own. Order a Spritz, watch the light drift across the hills opposite and let the afternoon unwind. If you're a water lover one of the simple pleasures here is the direct access into the lake. Hooks for towels and discreet handrails just under the water make it easy to slip in. The water is fresh and clear, warm in summer and bracing in October before the season ends.
Days can be as idle or as active as you like. The family own the nearby Lido dei Limoni, so you can sunbathe by the water all day during the summer months. Prefer to explore? Mountain bikes and kayaks are available on site, and the team arrange weekly guided walking tours that thread through Gargnano and finish at Fondo Crocefisso, Andrea’s Limonaia one of the few historic lemon houses still in genuine use. It’s a living slice of Lake Garda’s past, not a set-piece, and a highlight of any stay. Here they cultivate olives, lemons and vines; you can smell and taste the produce at the cooperative shop set up by Andrea Arosio where you can get a feel for the agricultural heartbeat of this shoreline.
Hotel du Lac is a charming small hotel that offers a traditional, elegant, friendly base on the west shores of Lake Garda. For an alternative hotel on Lake Garda, have a look at their sister hotel Hotel Gardenia.
