About Atami

Located in Japan's Shizuoka Prefecture, the coastal city of Atami has long been a resort town. The word 'Atami' itself means hot ocean, and there's evidence that people travelled here as early as the 8th-century exclusively for the city's hot springs. However, despite this rich heritage, the modern city of Atami as such was constructed in the late 1930s and so you won't find many historic buildings dotted around! Instead, most of the city is covered in concrete hotels, so the architecture itself is rather underwhelming if truth be told. However, there are some old buildings left and some of these you will find in our top pick of the best places to stay in Atami.

Atami was incredibly popular during the economic high-times of the 1980s, but once the Japanese economy took a downturn it was severely affected. Nowadays, however, it's becoming increasingly popular for commuters due to its proximity to both Tokyo and Yokohama, and so the city is enjoying a bit of a resurgence. You'll find a fair bit of culture here, with some fascinating museums to be explored, though if you'd rather spend your days in the hot springs enjoying the coastal views then that's understood!

As it's built on a steep mountain slope, Atami isn't very easily walkable - if you do fancy spending your days sightseeing then you're best off taking a taxi or a bus from place to place.

If you're visiting in the busy summer months then be sure to book ahead as the best places to stay in Atami get booked up well in advance.
