Hotel Review

The Ace Hotel Downtown LA's history is no less colourful than this part of town. Housed in the former United Artists building, the offices of Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford before it was sold to the evangelical pastor Gene Scott. Proud of its history, the Spanish Gothic theatre built by Chaplin still remains (it is utterly breathtaking, try and catch a show whilst you're there) as does the larger than life, neon rooftop sign proclaiming "JESUS SAVES". Reflective of the building's heritage and Downtown's lively past the interiors are a juxtaposition of the roaring twenties and LA's rock and roll era. Black and white photographs adorn the walls alongside sketches of musicians past and present. Rooms are more contemporary with an industrial edge. Exposed cement, brickwork and colour pops whilst large windows provide fantastic views of the city. Small rooms are what they say on the tin, no upscale marketing here, but they are perfectly formed and include a flatscreen TV and well stocked minibar. All bathrooms include indulgent Rudy’s toiletries and Pearl+ soaps. The Medium Suite with Terrace is a great value option for some private outdoor space. The loft suites feel like your very own apartment, whilst the Ace Suite is truly palatial and includes its own private terrace (right underneath that famous “JESUS SAVES” sign. Added extras also include your own Ace x Rega RP1 turntable and acoustic Martin Guitar. Downstairs the breakfast bar is a real treat and includes cold-pressed juices, freshly ground coffee as well as all American favourites: pancakes with maple syrup and bacon. Lunch and dinner are also served in the 1920s style restaurant, and there is a relaxed outdoor seating area that feels distinctly New York, rather than LA. Upstairs the rooftop bar, lounge and pool are a real “scene”, great if that’s what you’re looking for; less so if you’re after a relaxing wallow by the pool with your book. Here food is limited (you’re a long way from the kitchen!) and expensive for what it is. This is a place to meet and mingle. The pool is more of a Jacuzzi, but a great respite from the midday California sun: if you can get a lounger! Staff are incredibly friendly and always happy to help or recommend you things to do and see in the area. The property’s Downtown location make it an uber trendy spot, this coupled with its excellent signature cocktails and DJ sets means its very popular with outside guests, especially on the weekend. That said, if a jovial vibe is what you’re after then this may well be the spot for you!
