Search the best hotels in California
California is as American as Hollywood, sun drenched beaches, breathtaking natural vistas on a grand scale and bustling city life. It’s the largest state by population and where you’ll find the Golden Gate Bridge, Malibu, the Napa Valley, Yosemite National Park and Disneyland and SeaWorld.
Our Guru’s recommendations for the best places to stay in California range from glamorous resorts of the golden era of Hollywood, cheap and cheerful beachside B&Bs, Rodeo Drive residences, to remote vineyard hotels surrounded by lush farmland.....and everything in between.
Some of our Californian collections:
- 10 of the Best Wine hotels in the Napa Valley
- The Best Places to Stay in Los Angeles
- The Best Places to Stay in San Francisco
- The Best Places to Stay in Palm Springs
- 6 of the Best Hotels in Silicon Valley
- 4 of the Best Hotels for Yosemite National Park
Long-established as America’s dream factory, California is perhaps most associated with perpetual sunshine, beaches and beautiful bodies. If that’s your thing, then there is a wealth of ocean-view hotels to choose around Big Sur, Malibu, Santa Barbara, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Laguna Beach, San Diego, Santa Monica and Los Angeles’s Venice Beach.
But the surfers’ paradise, as projected by Hollywood, is just one of the identities embraced by the third largest state in the union. California is no less of a magnet for nature lovers: it’s hard to believe that California, the US’s third most populous state, should have areas that are described as “wilderness” - apart from the desert of course - but the famed coastal area south of Monterey fits that description. The Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, with an 80-foot waterfall as its focal point, is a stunning area of coastal beauty and the drive along Bixby Bridge is a marvel. Along with the obvious choices of Yosemite National Park, the Death Valley National Park and the Sequoia National Forest.
This is also a state for wine lovers. Napa is probably the best known wine centre in the Napa Valley, then there’s foodie favourite Healdsburg, in the heart of the Sonoma. Though St Helena, which is pretty, popular and high-end, Yountville with more Michelin stars than any other American town and old fashioned Calistoga are also good places to start.
- From the music and movies to the clothes and food, Los Angeles has an energy and promise it's impossible to duplicate. Yes, in L.A. the inexpensive sits comfortably beside the expensive. Little old delis and hot dog vans beside super clubs and Michelin starred restaurants. Markets beside big brand boutiques. Museums beside cinemas - but then this IS L.A..
- San Francisco has the cable cars, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, gay rights, foggy vintage beauty, lovely liberal attitudes, fabulous food, the freshest new technologies and a multitude of micro climates.
- San Diego famously has SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo, but it’s also has excellent beaches, a rich cultural life, lively nightlife - probably due to the numerous universities - a great Old Town and some fantastic museums.
- Santa Barbara has great swathes of sandy beach, lush wineries and matching, mission style architecture.
The famous “California state of mind” is about embracing all of the many faces of the Californian experience from vast desert wastes - for a gentle entry to desert life stay in Palm Springs - to primeval forests teeming with wildlife. Pristine lakeland, to the residual heritage of the 17th Century Spanish missionaries and the wild west of the 19th Century Gold Rush, to today’s gritty urban culture of rap and
What not to Miss
- Carmel-by-the-Sea’s pretty views and sandy beach have been attracting visitors since the 1880s and it has been especially popular with artists and writers - many who’ve been inspired to feature the famous beach fog in their work. Carmel’s Mission, founded in 1771, is said to be one of the most beautiful of California’s Spanish missions.
- Santa Barbara’s Mission is also worth visiting. It’s probably the city’s main visitor attraction. The largest in California with an unusual and impressive double bell tower. Founded in 1786, this is still an active parish church and has always been in continuous use. The churchyard, with skull carvings and Chumash artwork and graves, is another interesting attraction.
- The Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, with an 80-foot waterfall as its focal point, is a stunning area of coastal beauty and the drive along Bixby Bridge is a marvel.
- Even if you don’t make it to the Napa Valley or the Sonoma Valley, while in California you should really be drinking local wines.
- They’re obvious choices but SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo…
- As is the famously fun Santa Monica pier that was the very end of Route 66 and has been delivering entertainment since construction in 1908. There’s the fun fair and arcades, restaurants and bars and also the free concerts and outdoor cinema.
- And San Francisco’s cable cars, the Golden Gate Bridge and Golden Gate Park, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Alcatraz.
- And of course Rodeo Drive, Venice Beach, the Griffith Observatory and Universal Studios.
- Along with obvious choices Yosemite National Park, the Death Valley National Park and the Sequoia National Forest.
So whether you are there to climb in the Sierra Nevada, whose Mount Whitney is the US’s highest peak outside Alaska, or to explore the monumental Yosemite National Park or Disneyland at Anaheim, or gasp at the giant California Redwood trees of Sequoia National Park, enter San Francisco by the Golden Gate Bridge, or shop till you drop in Beverly Hill’s celebrated Rodeo Drive, Hotel Guru knows that the best places to stay in California are diverse and dynamic and imbued with the pulsating energy of this giant theme park of the American Dream. To paraphrase the song, welcome to Hotel Guru’s California… you can check in any time you like.

For an Apartment or Villa
If you’d prefer to stay in an apartment or private villa we recommend you visit our online partner booking.com.
- Los Angeles International Airport, or LAX, is California’s busiest hub, but San Francisco Airport, San Diego Airport, Oakland Airport and San Jose Airport might all be more useful, depending on where you’re starting your explorations of this state.
- If you want to hire a car - which we highly recommend if you’re staying in California - we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
- California is known for its sunshine, so weather-wise there’s really not a bad time to visit. April and May are particularly nice though if your aim is to see quite a bit of the state.
