Hotel Review

For those looking for a resort which has something for all the family, Penha Longa, in beautiful Sintra, just 30 minutes from Lisbon is hard to beat. It has two golf courses, both designed by Robert Trent Jones, Junior and one, the Atlantic, an 18-hole, par-72 championship course. There is a Kid’s Club which in summer is run by the UK-based Powder Byrne and there are treasure hunts and a playground. Popcorn and candy floss appear regularly at tea-time.

There are indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, a jogging track and a good spa, with yoga platforms, hot tub and meditation labyrinth and treatment rooms using Natura Bissé. Dogs are welcome and even walked upon request.

The resort places a huge emphasis on gastronomy offering ten restaurants including two which have a Michelin star: the 22-seat LAB, which offers a tasting menu dinner, created by Sergi Arola, (try his red shrimp lasagne) and Midori, which received its first Michelin star for 2019; a small but very impressive Japanese restaurant with memorable red mullet sashimi and Japanese charcoal seared toro nigiri. More dining from the stars comes with Arola, a popular Sunday lunch destination, where Chef Sergi Arola serves a tapas menu and his signature dish of potato bravas. The B-lounge just off the lobby offers American hamburgers; there are traditional Portuguese favourites at poolside restaurant Aqua, and Italian dishes at Mercatto. Spices Restaurant offers an Asian buffet with highlights from Thailand, India, China and Japan.
