About Liguria

Liguria, Italy’s dazzling Riviera gem, offers a stunning mix of alpine backdrops and a sparkling Mediterranean coastline. From the historic charm of Genoa to the chic allure of Portofino and the pastel perfection of Cinque Terre, it’s a dream for hotel lovers. Think grand waterfront hotels in Portofino, stylish palazzos in Genoa, relaxed beach stays in Rapallo, and cosy boutique spots in Sestri Levante. Whether you’re after luxury, budget, or family-friendly comfort, Liguria has your perfect stay.

Liguria’s mountainous backdrop shapes everything here, from the dramatic cliffs and pastel villages of the Cinque Terre to the tiny medieval towns tucked just inland. Genoa, the region’s gritty and fascinating heart, makes a great base, but it’s the coast in both directions that steals the show. West along the Riviera di Ponente, life moves at a gentler pace, with old-fashioned seaside resorts and fishing towns that feel charmingly unpolished. Head east along the Riviera di Levante and you’ll hit the glamorous harbors of Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure, and Camogli, as well as sleek new resorts. Between the two stretches are dozens of sandy and pebbly beaches, small family-run hotels that still know how to welcome kids, and plenty of winding drives that reveal more than just the postcard highlights.

Travel information

  • Liguria has plenty of entry points. Road and rail offer a myriad of choices, and by plane there’s Genoa Airport, within Liguria, or nearby you’ll find Pisa International Airport, Florence Airport, and Milan’s Malpensa Airport, Linate Airport and Bergamo Airport.
  • If you plan to hire a car we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
  • Liguria is busiest in the summer. Many visitors, both Italian and international, visit Liguria for its breathtaking coastline, with plans to enjoy its beaches and summery atmosphere. However the region is sunny and pretty almost year round, so there’s plenty of reason to visit out of season if you’re not planning a beach break. November through March are the rainiest months, and places like Genoa and La Spezia get quite a lot of rain. Some businesses close up at different times of year, so it’s a good idea to be more specific about the ’where’ before you make final decisions about the ’when’.
